Frequently asked questions

Find answers about how Ovation works, what platforms it supports, and how it fits into your program.

General

What is Ovation?+
Ovation is a communication practice platform that uses AI-powered avatars to help learners rehearse presentations, interviews, and difficult conversations on desktop or in VR. After each session, learners receive clear, actionable feedback to help them improve.
What is an AI-powered speaking simulator?+
An AI-powered speaking simulator lets learners practice out loud with responsive avatars instead of only reading prompts or recording themselves. Ovation combines spoken practice, realistic scenarios, and feedback so each session feels closer to the real moment.
How is Ovation different from practicing alone or using a chatbot?+
Practicing alone can build familiarity, but it usually does not recreate audience pressure or follow-up questions. Generic chatbots are mostly text-based. Ovation is built for spoken rehearsal with AI avatars, desktop and VR environments, and coaching feedback after the session.
Do I need a VR headset to use Ovation?+
No. Ovation works on desktop without any specialized hardware. VR is supported for a more immersive experience, but it is not required.
What types of scenarios can I practice?+
Ovation supports presentations, job interviews, difficult conversations, roleplay, client interactions, and more. Scenarios can be customized with different audience personalities, tones, difficulty levels, and Scenario Modifiers, which let you guide the AI avatar's behavior, tone, goals, backstory, or communication style for a more specific practice experience.
What are Avatars and Personas?+
Avatars are the AI-powered characters you speak with during practice. They can listen, react, ask follow-up questions, challenge your ideas, or support the roleplay based on the scenario. Personas let you make those characters more specific by defining traits like name, age, role, personality, mood, and communication style. This helps instructors and learners create more realistic practice partners for interviews, presentations, roleplay, panels, and difficult conversations.
How does the AI feedback work?+

After each session, Ovation gives you both objective speaking analytics and personalized AI coaching. You can review your transcript, speaking rate, filler word usage, verbal pauses, and other delivery metrics to understand how you performed.

The AI feedback is powered by Factors, which are customizable criteria that tell Ovation what skills to evaluate. You can use built-in Factors like clarity, structure, empathy, persuasiveness, fluency, and engagement, or create your own for a specific class, interview, roleplay, or training program. Ovation then scores your performance against those Factors and provides targeted coaching notes, so you know what went well, what needs work, and how to improve in your next session.

What are AI credits?+
AI credits are the monthly usage pool for AI-powered features, including simulated audience responses, AI-generated report feedback, and other AI activities in the app. Individual subscriptions include a fixed monthly amount. Organization subscriptions share credits across the organization, and additional licenses add more monthly credits.
What languages does Ovation support?+
The Ovation website and in-app menus are currently English only. Inside a practice session, you can speak Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK), English (US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (LATAM), Spanish (Spain), Swedish, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese, and AI avatars will respond in that language. AI-generated feedback can also be generated in those languages.

Education and Institutions

How does Ovation fit into a course?+
Instructors can assign scenarios aligned with course objectives. Students complete sessions independently on desktop or in VR, and instructors track progress through reporting and analytics.
Can instructors customize the experience?+
Yes. Instructors can create assignments, adjust scenarios, customize audience behavior, and shape feedback to support existing curriculum goals.
How does this work with a full class?+
Ovation supports scalable use through structured assignments, concurrent licensing, and facilitation workflows for VR labs and classrooms.
What support do new organizations receive?+
Ovation employees help new organizations get started with onboarding, training, and deployment guidance. We show instructors, lab teams, and administrators how the software works, how to set up users and assignments, and how to deploy Ovation properly at scale across classes, labs, or programs.
Can we track student progress?+
Yes. Reporting provides visibility into participation, performance, and improvement over time.

Technical and Licensing

What platforms does Ovation run on?+
Ovation runs on Windows desktop and Meta Quest VR headsets. Mac support is in development.
How does concurrent licensing work?+
Instead of paying per user, you pay for the number of people who can practice at the same time. When a session ends, the license is available for the next person.
What VR headsets are supported?+
Ovation supports Meta Quest headsets. Check the documentation for the latest compatibility details.
Where can I find setup documentation?+
Product documentation, setup guides, and tutorials are available at docs.ovationvr.com.
